Interview with Joe Ruby

Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were the executive producers of Rubik the Amazing Cube as the heads of Ruby-Spears Enterprises, which - at that time - was sister company to Hannah-Barbera under Thaft Broadcasting. Joe and Ken had worked together since the 60s, creating and writing shows for Hannah-Barbera. Perhaps their most notable creation was Scooby-Doo, which is still a phenomenon around the world in its continuing success. But in 1977 Joe and Ken launched their own animation production company, and in 1983 Ideal Toys asked them to create a show about a Rubik's Cube. Joe Ruby headed the project.

On February 4, 2008 I had the pleasure of talking to him over the phone and asking a few questions about Rubik, as well as the animation industry at large. I got lots of interesting answers. Mr. Ruby was very kind and spoke to me for over an hour. Many thanks to him and Ruby-Spears Productions, especially to Craig King, who arranged the interview for me via email.

The interview is coming soon.

Our staff of thousands is now feverishly transcribing millions of feet of audio tape!
