I drew Rubik off an on until I was about 12. I don't think I ever drew him in context of the show or the other characters, which I think would have made for much more interesting drawings, but it seems I only wanted to draw Rubik, ususally wearing a funny hat of some kind and only vaguely resembling himself. I had no reference images outside of watching the show each week, so I think I did OK. Anyway, the early drawings are pretty funny. Early RubikThese Rubiks were done pretty quickly with just a marker. They were part of some attempt at an illustrated story. Obviously Rubik from the side posed a certain challenge.
Middle RubikI had gotten some pastel pencils for Christmas in 1983 so my next wave of Rubiks had color added and appear to be typical of girlie artwork from the 80s, all puffy hearts and cuteness, not to mention the way kids write the obvious on their drawings.
I think this one was done in the spring of 84 at school. It's got that frantic end of school feeing to it. The entire picture included several more cartoon characters all part of one big scene where Rubik is a minor character, but it was so funny I had to include it here.
Late RubikI think these were drawn around the time that the Rubik show went off the air. The melancholy one with the wierd gray skin looks sort of like impressionist marker art. I think the little smiling Rubik on the spool might be my best one ever - at age 11 - and the Christmas one is likely the last Rubik I drew as a kid. It definitely wins the prize for the best color.
